Deep Tissue
100
Deep Tissue 100 is designed to prepare the
student to enter the rapidly maturing sub field of clinical and deep
tissue massage. The goal of this course is to provide the student with
the clinical understanding and specialized skills necessary to
effectively treat patients suffering from basic neuromusculoskeletal
conditions.
This course provides students
the foundational knowledge and skills for working with common
injuries, pain, and physical dysfunctions. In addition to the many
hands-on deep tissue techniques and bodywork modalities, the core of
this course centers on the application of The Body Wisdom 12 Step
Protocol.
The Body Wisdom 12 Step
Protocol is a therapeutic roadmap that moves client and therapist
through the necessary steps for professional care from taking a
comprehensive health history, through postural analysis, physical
assessments, myofascial technique, deep tissue strategies,
neuromuscular therapy, strain/sprain, pain free stretching and
homecare strategies. Each
step in the protocol adds to and supports the one following, keeping
the practitioner continuously informed as to where they are in the
therapeutic process.
The ability to correctly
assess the cause and type of condition a patient presents is
crucial to treating them successfully in any clinical setting.
Understanding and performing client assessment is, therefore, a
major element of this course. Assessment topics and skills covered
include: health history, postural assessment, advanced palpation
skills, range of motion testing, and basic injury assessment.
Students will learn appropriate treatment approaches for acute
strain/sprain injuries, chronic dysfunctions of the low back, neck,
hip, and shoulder, postural dysfunction, and general rehabilitation
protocols.
Course Highlights
Principles of Deep
Tissue:
-
Working
deep without strain on the therapist or pain to the client
-
Using
leverage instead of effort
-
Working
slowly and waiting for the tissue to melt
-
Avoiding
the use of thumbs for deeper work
-
Allowing
the body to stabilize before moving on
Client

Basic Deep Tissue Strokes
including:
-
Lengthening
Strokes
-
Anchor

Use
of the basic Deep Tissue “Tools” including:
Facilitated
Stretching Techniques:
The major portion of this course is devoted to
hands-on skill development. Muscle-specific palpation will be reviewed
and emphasized throughout to include assessing for tone, development,
scar tissue, and fibrosis. Other hands-on techniques that will be
introduced and practiced include: myofascial release, trigger point
therapy, cross-fiber friction, post-isometric relaxation, and general
deep-tissue techniques.
Prerequisites: Therapeutic 1-3 or by
approval.
