Job Description

Consultant Psychiatrist in Old Age: Community & Memory Clinic

Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust

We are currently seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our community team and run a local memory clinic. Although the administrative base will be at Seward Lodge, Hertford, the clinics may also run from Rosanne House, Welwyn Garden City (about 8 miles from Seward Lodge).

The post holder will provide consultant input to the community team and run the local memory clinic. Clinical work may occur at other Trust locations or community destinations such as patients' homes or residential/nursing homes. The post holder may be required to attend team meetings at a location determined by the team manager.

The post holder will run two clinics for the early memory diagnostic and support service (EMDASS). In each memory clinic, the consultant will be supported by a memory nurse who will take history, conduct cognitive tests, and later write a detailed report. The memory nurse will discuss new patients with the consultant, who will make a diagnosis and start treatment after seeing the patient. The consultant is expected to write a short letter to the GP highlighting the diagnosis and treatment plan. The one-stop memory clinic allows the consultant to conduct two follow-up assessments while the memory nurse assesses the new patient.

Please note this Job Description is awaiting Royal College Approval and is therefore subject to slight amendment.

Main Duties of the Job

  1. Manage, appraise, and provide professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed by consultant colleagues and the medical director, in accordance with the Trust's personnel policies and procedures.
  2. Ensure that junior medical staff operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
  3. Undertake the administrative duties associated with patient care.
  4. Record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively and submit this promptly to the Information Department.
  5. Participate in service and business planning for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
  6. Participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
  7. Attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust and the team, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.

This list is not exhaustive; please see the Job Description for a full list of duties.
