WHAT YOU WILL DO:

As a Fish and Wildlife Technician - Hatchery Technician you will provide support for the work unit in a technical manner by caring for the Rainbow Trout through the release of these fish and performing maintenance on grounds, equipment, and other duties within a fish hatchery environment to achieve assigned management goals.

The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

* The employee in this position is required to live on station unless housing is not available and to work on an on-call basis as assigned. When performing on-call duty, the employee must remain on hatchery grounds and within hearing and proper response distance to hatchery alarms to minimize risk to hatchery resources; however, the employee is not confined to specific hatchery facilities, and may use on-call time effectively for personal purposes provided the employee remains unimpaired to effectively respond to alarm notifications. Although there is no "fixed" time for response, response time should be 15 to 30 minutes or less, dependent on hatchery conditions. The employee's presence on hatchery grounds is also necessary as a means of enhancing security for the hatchery as a whole. When conditions allow (during periods of non-critical conditions) on call employees may leave hatchery grounds for the purpose of making any reasonable trip within the 15 to 30 minutes response window. Employees should be allowed sufficient flexibility while on call and in conjunction with the hatchery manager may discuss timeframes allowed. It is recognized each situation is unique and can be handled on a case by case basis.

* May work in or near cold, deep or fast moving water for extended periods of time. May handle chemicals used in the treatment of fish or disinfection of fish handling equipment to prevent or control fish diseases. May work with paint, vehicle fuel and lubricants and other solvents during routine maintenance activities.

* May be subjected to loud noise when operating equipment and must be able to wearing hearing protection.

* Must be able to lift bags of fish feed up to 50 lbs to fill electric fish feeders.

* Must display a good sense of diplomacy when dealing with the public.

* May often work alone on weekends and may have to respond to emergencies while working alone.

* This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

* This position requires the possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL). On your application, be sure to indicate in the Work Experience section if you have a CDL. If the selected applicant does not possess a CDL, they are required to obtain this license within six months of hire and must retain it as a condition of continued employment in this position. The department provides a training program for drivers obtain their CDL and will train all new employees how to operate a department Commercial Motor Vehicle. The department does not pay the cost for the CDL however, the department will reimburse employees up to one-hundred dollars ($100) for the CDL examination fees and renewal licensing fees pursuant to the Collective Bargaining Agreement 2021-2023 Letter of Agreement 00.00-19-338. The cost of the physical exam would be covered (usual, customary, and reasonable as determined by PEBB Medical Plans) if the employee is enrolled in an eligible PEBB Medical Plan. Pursuant to the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and Federal Highway Administration regulations, candidates must successfully pass a preemployment controlled substance test before being hired into this position. Additionally, employees required to hold a CDL will be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up alcohol/controlled substance testing as a condition of employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Fish and Wildlife Technician ($3477 - $4755):

An Associate's degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science;

* OR-

Eighteen months of fish culture (care of fish) experience. (six months of fisheries, fish screens, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

A higher level degree in Fisheries Science or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate's degree.

Fish and Wildlife Technician Entry Option ($3218 - $3948):

Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications). Previous related experience is desirable.

Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible.
