A genetic counseling assistant (GCA) works closely with and under the supervision of genetic counselors (GCs) who serve patients who have or are at risk for inherited diseases. The GCA in this position would support our current team of seven pediatric genetic counselors alongside another GCA colleague, and would work with GCs, medical geneticists, and additional team members. Streamlining the genetic testing process by preparing orders and facilitating insurance pre-authorization, when necessary. Tracking genetic testing orders and resolving missing samples or delays in testing. Calling patients and/or offices to request medical records, previous genetic testing results, and family history information. Returning patient phone calls regarding questions about their GC appointment, insurance questions, updated family history information, and other administrative questions. Triaging referrals. Preparing and sending variant downgrade letters. Creating and editing content for patient education about common genetic conditions. Reviewing medical records and summarizing information in anticipation of a patient appointment with the GCs. Assisting in the preparation of materials for clinics, lectures, research studies, quality improvement projects, and community outreach. Opportunity to discuss genetic testing results and clinical coordination with patients. Helping to arrange shadowing opportunities by collecting documentation and communicating with interested individuals. Participating in meetings with the GCs and/or laboratory representatives as directed. Supporting the work and responsibilities of the genetic counselors as needed. Position Compensation Range: $21.52 - $33.36 Hourly MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education: Bachelor's degree preferred. Preference given to individuals who have completed a GCA training course. Experience: Experience: Two years of administrative experience. Licensure: None PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers but can require the carrying of multiple testing kits across the hospital campus.
