What you'll do:

Space Planning and Assessments:

  • Gather information through interviews with Deans, Directors, Chairs, and other stakeholders to understand and document their vision and goals. Translate these findings into space requirements for additional faculty, staff, teaching areas, resource spaces, research labs, etc. Using university space guidelines, determine the appropriate size and total square footage needed. Formulate recommendations for effective space utilization. Perform test fits to confirm that program requirements can be accommodated within a specific space. To ensure the best use of university space, recommend changes in space assignments and collaborate with stakeholders to plan room layouts and spatial adjacencies.

Move Coordination:

  • Meet with departments and project managers to identify move-related needs for both small and capital projects. Coordinate moving activities between a professional moving company or WVU labor crew and the departments involved. Assist units with pre- and post-move activities by serving as a liaison with other university department.

Space Audit:

  • Assist the Space Management group with data collection and communication during the university's annual space audit. Occasionally conduct physical space audits and inventories. Facilitate communications with building supervisors to ensure data accuracy and integrity.

Capital Project Planning / Programming:

  • Collaborate with Deans, Directors, Chairs, and upper administration to develop a Program of Requirements that outlines the goals and objectives of capital projects. Ensure the vision of upper administration is accurately reflected. The Program of Requirements defines the types, sizes, and intended uses of spaces; validates site and infrastructure conditions; and provides guidelines for data, locks, and other facility elements. Convey the approved Program of Requirements to selected consultants and guide the project through the schematic design phase.

Campus Master Planning:

  • Support the university's mission by contributing to the development of the Campus Master Plan, which recommends new construction and renovations to meet programmatic needs. The Campus Master Plan is prepared in accordance with BOG Finance and Administration Rule 5.4 - Campus Facilities Plan and serves as a guiding document for future capital projects. A comprehensive plan is required every ten years, with updates mandated every five years.

Design Standards, Policies & Procedures:

  • Develop, update, and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and design standards. Enforce formal design guidelines for building interiors, signage, and other visual elements affecting campus aesthetics. Collaborate with the Design & Construction unit to integrate these standards into all capital projects.

Professional Development:

  • Research, evaluate, and benchmark best practices in planning, programming, interior design, and construction. Advise the Assistant Director of Facilities Planning and Space Management on potential opportunities for implementation within the department.

  • Perform additional responsibilities and ad hoc tasks as assigned by the Assistant Director of Facilities Planning and Space Management.
