POSITION TITLE: Road Maintenance Worker
LOCATION: Longview, WA
DEPARTMENT: Department of Transportation
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
FLSA STATUS: Nonexempt, fulltime
WAGE RANGE: $26.40 - $30.40 per hour

Position Summary :

Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the maintenance, repair, and construction of road facilities including streets, sidewalks, alleys, and rights-of-way to assure the safety of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Demonstrates the proper and safe operation of a variety vehicles, and hand and power tools. Honors and represents the mission, vision, values of CIT and the Public Works department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs inspection of Tribal Street facilities and appurtenances for maintenance and repair conditions; conducts street maintenance and roadway repair
  • Assists with minor maintenance of facilities including replacement of light fixtures, painting, and repair of plumbing fixtures.
  • Maintains parking areas and grounds, including plant care, litter control, de-icing, and snow removal.
  • Conducts asphalt work including pothole patching, square cut patching, overlaying, installation of berms, and related work associated with street-related maintenance repairs.
  • Maintains and repairs irrigation system.
  • Loads and unloads materials needed for work.
  • Moves equipment, materials, and furnishings as needed.
  • Breaks and removes asphalt or other surfaces using air, electric or hydraulic jackhammers, chipping guns, pick, shovel, and other tools and equipment.
  • Assists with work orders and construction projects, including build out, sanding, mudding, and painting.
  • Operates snow & ice removal vehicles during hazardous road conditions.
  • Assists in a variety of construction projects and duties such as trenching; building forms; mixing, pouring, and finishing of concrete; and removal and/or replacement of asphalt, concrete curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
  • Adheres to safety procedures and utilizes safety apparel as appropriate.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of traditional form of government and tribal customs and traditions.
  • Knowledge of safe operation, use, and care of hand and power tools, and equipment used in groundskeeping, construction, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in preventive maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements.
  • Knowledge of operation of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of layout, operation, and activities of street systems and street department duties.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in streets
  • Ability to work flexible hours including occasional weekends.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize and accomplish tasks within strict deadlines.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Skill in performing a variety of responsible duties in the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets.
  • Skill in operating, servicing, and making minor repairs to tools and equipment used in general maintenance and construction work.
  • Skill in the safe use of hand and electrical tools.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in maintenance, construction or related experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license is required when driving vehicles for work-related purposes.
  • Class A CDL preferred.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background screening / investigation according to the established requirements below.
  • Position will be located out of Public Works office located in Longview WA.
  • Position is NOT a work from home position.

Tribal preference in accordance with Cowlitz Indian Tribe Code and CIT Employee Policies and Procedures Handbook shall apply to all positions. All positions are required to adhere to CIT’s established safety policies regarding vaccine requirements and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand and walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to talk, hear, stoop, bend, kneel, and climb. Normal visual acuity at close and far distances is required by this job. The employee frequently will lift and/or carry objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in an interior setting and in an outdoor environment. Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, and cleaning agents will occur. Exposure to unpleasant odors, bodily fluids, infectious disease, or hazardous material will occur. Work is frequently performed near hazardous and/or moving equipment or machinery. Situations will occur where protective clothing, equipment, devices, and materials are needed. Noise level is usually moderate to excessive. Evening and/or weekend work and overnight travel may be required.
